Lyme Disease in the State of Maine

Background

Lyme Disease is a serious disease with serious consequences. It is also preventable. The rate of reported cases of Lyme Disease in the state of Maine has seen a staggering increase since 2015. At Owl’s Head Solutions, many of our employees live right here in Maine so Lyme Disease has become part of everyday life for our families. We wanted to use our strategic and creative skills to design an interactive infographic to help Mainers understand their risks and the protective measures they can take to reduce their chance of exposure.

Challenge

Our challenge was to educate residents of Maine about the prevalence and symptoms of Lyme Disease—as well as what preventive measures they can take to protect themselves—with the goal of decreasing the number of Lyme Disease cases.

Approach

We strategized that an interactive experience would be an important way to engage our audience by visually outlining the problem and inviting readers/users to interact with the data and information. This level of involvement would offer clear and specific ways for Mainers to protect themselves and their families.

Methodology + Deliverables

Inspired by our natural surroundings right here in Maine, we began by designing a series of illustrations that would feel appropriate and recognizable to our audience. Working from this illustration style we broke our messaging up into snackable sections that users could interact with easily. We offer access to the data, break it down, support it with compelling visuals, and provide with links to learn more. Users are meaningfully engaged and educated since they can click through and focus on information that’s relevant to them.

Response

During the first week of launch, our users were spending almost 4 minutes per session. With an average bounce rate for a site like this being roughly 62%, our bounce rate since launch has been just 46%. And 22% of our visitors have returned to the site more than once. All this tells us that our users are very actively engaged with our content. We will continue to improve the experience for our users while updating the statistics year over year.
